Konstruksi Motivasi Fungsional dan Estetika dalam Pengambilan Keputusan Perawatan Ortodontik: Studi Sosiokultural pada Masyarakat Sumatera Barat

Abstract

Perawatan ortodonti kini tidak hanya menjadi kebutuhan medis, tetapi juga bagian dari konstruksi estetika diri yang dipengaruhi oleh faktor psikososial dan gender. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat perbandingan urgensi gender dalam melakukan pengambilan keputusan untuk melakukan perawatan ortodonti. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan fenomenologi, yang bertujuan mengeksplorasi dan mengungkap esensi pengalaman partisipan terkait fenomena yang dialami secara langsung dalam konteks kehidupan mereka. Sebanyak 20 orang turut berpartisipasi sebagai responden dalam penelitian ini yang terdiri dari 10 orang laki-laki dan 10 orang perempuan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat cara pandang dan motif seseorang melakukan perawatan ortodonti, dimana perempuan menjalani perawatan ortodonti, yang sebagian besar bukan karena masalah fungsional pada gigi, tetapi karena alasan estetika yang dan berujung pada kepercayaan diri. Sebaliknya, laki-laki lebih banyak terdorong melakukan pemasangan behel karena kebutuhan fungsional dan profesional, seperti tuntutan pekerjaan atau adanya malfungsi oral. Peningkatan kepercayaan diri setelah pemasangan behel secara signifikan dirasakan oleh perempuan, bahkan turut berdampak pada aspek relasional dan sosial. Perbedaan ini menunjukkan bahwa persepsi terhadap kebutuhan ortodonti tidak hanya bersifat klinis, tetapi juga sangat dipengaruhi oleh faktor sosial, budaya, dan psikologis. Penelitian ini menegaskan pentingnya pendekatan multidisipliner dalam memahami perilaku kesehatan gigi berbasis gender.
